A Tradition 50 Years in the Making

Haystack Pizza carries on a family tradition that began in 1972 when it was founded by our owner, George Kouloulias. While a San Francisco original, George’s story began over 6500 miles away from our current home in Noe Valley on the island of Ikaria, Greece, where George was born and raised before moving to San Francisco and starting a new life.

Upon his arrival, George joined the bourgeoning Greek diaspora in neighborhoods such as the Mission District and surrounding areas like Noe Valley. He eventually bought the building at 3881 24th Street where we are still located today, finding its namesake in the fact that it used to be the home of a hay company that provided food for San Francisco’s horses in the pre-automobile era.

With the Haystack, George introduced locals to the authentic flavors, spices, and aromas of Greece that he grew up with. He combined these traditions with classic and popular Italian fare that he fell in love with, combining everything into the menu that our patrons enjoy to this day.

George and his family on the 50th anniversary of the Haystack’s opening. Four generations strong!

In the over half-century since, Haystack Pizza has been a staple of Noe Valley. Nestled right in the middle of 24th Street, welcoming regulars and first timers alike. In that time, the Haystack has remained a family affair, with three generations of George’s family putting on an apron and working in the dining room, kitchen, or behind the bar to make sure that his legacy stays alive and thriving.

Whether you join us for a casual meal, a special celebration, or just to satisfy a craving, you will always have a place our table.
